This course provides a comprehensive overview of pediatric tracheostomy and ventilation for rehabilitative healthcare providers. Participants will gain a deep understanding of the indications, procedures, and complications associated with pediatric tracheostomies, differentiating them from adult cases.  The course will explore the impact of tracheostomy and ventilation on speech, language, feeding, and swallowing development, enabling participants to effectively assess and address communication and swallowing challenges in this population.  Additionally, the course will cover the candidacy, application, and assessment of speaking valves for pediatric patients.  Finally, participants will learn about the decannulation process, including criteria, protocols, and common challenges. Through this course, healthcare providers will develop the knowledge and skills necessary to provide optimal care for children with tracheostomies and ventilation.

Learning Outcomes:

• Participants will identify 3 pediatric tracheostomy indications and procedures and be able to identify 3 key differences between pediatric versus adult tracheostomy.
• Participants will list 3 pediatric-specific tracheostomy complications.
• Participants will describe the impact of tracheostomy and ventilation on speech, language, feeding, and swallowing development.
• Participants will identify 3 factors for candidacy for speaking valve use and its application in pediatric patients.
• Participants will describe the process and criteria for decannulation in pediatrics, including proposed protocols and common challenges.
