Tracheostomy tubes & mechanical ventilators provide essential support to children with chronic respiratory failure. This course will review some of the etiologies associated with respiratory. The lecture will review of essential information related tracheostomy tubes and mechanical ventilators for healthcare providers.  There will also be an overview of the UVA Pediatric Home Ventilator Program to showcase a unique program to reduce adverse events in the pediatric tracheostomy population.  This course will be

Learning Objectives:

  • Define chronic respiratory failure
  • List at least 3 essential size characteristics of tracheostomy tubes
  • List at least 3 essential characteristics of a mechanical ventilator prescription
  • Identify at least 5 components of a home ventilator program such as the UVA Pediatric Home Ventilator Program

Michael Lee O’Brien, MSc, RRT, RRT-ACCS, RRT-NPS, RRT-SDS, RPFT, AE-C Certified Lean Practitioner

Michael is the lead respiratory therapist at UVA where he co-created and developed the UVA Pediatric Home Ventilator Program in 2020 to train the caregivers of technology-dependent children, as evidenced by management of over 40 children with tracheostomy tube and ventilators and editing the textbook chapter “Home Care” in Neonatal and Pediatric Respiratory Care.
