Verbal Communication Options for Patients with Tracheostomy and Mechanical Ventilation Webinar is a 3.5 hour course that provides the available speech options including cuff deflation, fenestrated tracheostomy tubes, talking tracheostomy tubes (above the cuff ventilation), speech cannulas, and different types of speaking valves.  The course will provide suggestions for patient candidacy and how to implement each option into the care plan.  The learner will determine cuff deflation status for each approach and ways to assess for airway patency.  The learner will also be provided with techniques and ventilator manipulations to improve voicing and patient comfort.  There are videos with demonstrations of patients using communication methods to supplement the course.  There will be case studies to help determine the ideal option.  Free sample protocols are provided as well as a communication quick reference form. This course is available for 0.35 ASHA CEUs.

  • State 3 different types of speech options for patients with tracheostomy
  • Determine cuff status for 4 types of communication options
  • State at least 3 signs of poor airway patency
  • Determine at least 3 ways to troubleshoot impaired voicing with tracheostomy
  • Determine the most appropriate communication option based on patient characteristics
